Welcome to the research group of Niels Asger Mortensen. The group recently moved from the Department of Micro and Nanotechnology to the Department of Photonics Engineering, both at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The research focus is on the theory and synthesis (design) of structured materials and in particular on new wave phenomena and material properties, not provided to us by Nature herself. The new paradigm of metamaterials is to provide such new advanced or enhanced material functionalities through artificial (sub)wavelength structuring of the material rather than trough the individual contributions from the atomic-scale constituents as is the case in most naturally occuring materials. The list of past and present research topics include photonic crystals, photonic bandgap and microstructured optical fibers, nanoplasmonics, metamaterials, optofluidics, and low-dimensional electron systems such as semiconductor 2DEGs and graphene.
