The Coding and Visual Communication Technology Group focuses on error-correcting coding and image and video coding.
Error-correcting coding
Advanced error-correcting coding is useful for both core and access networks. Applications in radio and satellite communication have been the most important for many years. All present wireless systems apply error-correction and they would not be possible without. In optical communication, it is becoming a strategic discipline for high capacity long distance transmission where new codes will be tailored to the properties of the transmission line. The research here is focused within the following main activities:
- algebraic coding theory
- theory of convolutional codes
- decoding algorithms
- concatenated coding systems
- application of coded systems in satellite communication
- error-correcting coding in optical communication
Image and video coding
The image and video coding activities are directed towards multimedia applications where a variety of image and video data need to be coded efficiently for optimal use of the available communication bandwidth. The transmission of video and visual data in general is often a driving force for new broadband systems. Examples of research acitivities within the group are:
-
improving video quality for flat panel displays,
-
principles for optimizing fast coding of video using H.264/MPEG4p10 Advanced Video Coding
-
analysis of video coding and compressed domain coding
-
error resilient video coding for wireless communication including satellite
-
distributed video coding
-
video and image coding for space applications
