In July and August 2008, DTU Fotonik held a Summer School for international students. As always, it was a great success and helped several attenddes to decide to do their degree work here as well. below you can read the invitation and content of that summer school. There will also be an internatino Summer School next year.
Invitation
The Department of Communication, Optics, and Materials, DTU Fotonik, would like to invite international students to a short summer course in July to August as part of the DTU Summer University program. The idea is to present DTU and the especially DTU Fotonik to students that potentially would like to be guests of DTU. Guest students may be at DTU for one semester or they may be enrolled in the two year M.Sc. programs. DTU Fotonik has many international guest students as well as students in the two year M.Sc. program in Telecommunication. The M.Sc. program is described at http://www.fotonik.dtu.dk/English/Education/Int_Msc.aspx, and this link also gives a more general description of DTU Fotonik.
There is a maximum of 25 seats in the Telecommunication Summer University. The applicants are evaluated as decribed below under Entrance Requirements.

Telecommunication Summer University Content
As described above the main content is focused in three projects
- Experiments in lasers and optics for communication
The experiments are done in a new state-of-the-art student’s laboratory and the main learning principle is learning-by-doing. The necessary theory will be introduced before the project.
- Modelling and simulation of a communication network
The project will introduce the students to network modelling and simulation using a commercial software tool (OPNET Modeler). In the project, the students must develop and document a model of some communication system, and use the model for studying the performance of the communication system. Knowledge of C/C++ programming is required.
- Development of a small application for a mobile phone
The project will introduce the students to mobile applications. In the project, the students must develop and document software for such an application. Knowledge of C/C++ programming is required.
The description of the projects will be improved in the coming time, so please watch the website as it develops.
Evaluation
The two reports are evaluated and if both are approved, the course is declared to be passed. The workload of the course is 5 ECTS credit points and these points will count if the student is admitted to DTU at a later time. For the M.Sc. in Telecommunication where 20 credit points are required in prerequisite courses, the summer university will reduce the amount of required prerequisite courses to 10 ECTS points.
Entrance Requirements
The Summer University is aimed at students in the middle of the 5 year program for an Electronics, a Telecommunication, or a Computer Engineering degree. Besides that, there are no specific prerequisites. However, the selection of projects may depend a little on your academic background.
There is a maximum of 25 seats in the summer university. If many applications are received, the students will be selected based upon grades in the courses that are relevant for telecommunication, i.e. such courses as “Computer Science”, “Information & Data transmission”, “Computer networks”, or “Telecommunications”.
Application
Application deadline is May 2, 2008.
Together with the Application Form please enclose documentation for relevant grades(see Entrance Requirements) and English language skills. A statement of purpose - i.e. why do you want to be admitted to the course - should also be included.
Look up and download the Application Form and send it to the address below. Note that the Application Form states
"An official document of approval from home university is required together with your application". This is NOT required for the Telecommunications programme.
