The Ph.D. Program at DTU Fotonik

The education of PhD Students is central to all activities at DTU Photonics.  At all times some 50 PhD students are in the process of completing projects and continuing their education.  The program takes 3 years which means that annually about 15 projects are completed at DTU Photonics, including a public presentation and defence.

State-of-the-art research work

PhD projects at DTU Photonics are completely integrated into the Competence Areas. Related activities are thus always in progress. This ensures optimal progress in a project. PhD students have access to well-equipped state-of-the-art laboratories, and since projects are often carried out in larger research collaborations, it is relatively easy to get more resources for acquiring new equipment etc.

The Student-Supervisor Relationship

The dominating part of the PhD programme is a research project carried out by the student under guidance by a supervisor, thus it is of prime importance that an agreement is reached with a possible supervisor before a PhD programme can start. First contact can be established through contacting the staff listed in the research Areas as outlined below.

PhD Life at DTU Photonics

DTU Photonics has a global network of contacts to other research organizations and companies within our field. Usually a PhD student visits companies, conferences and partners all over the world during their years at DTU Photonics. PhD students have every opportunity to take part in these collaborations and benefit from shorter or longer research trips abroad.  DTU Photonics has employees and guests from all over the world and we see this as a major advantage as this clearly gives an open and friendly atmosphere and working environment especially to new employees, also, as a consequence, English is used as the preferred language at all meetings etc.

Who can be a PhD student?

National and international candidates may apply to take part in the programme. We are seeking highly qualified candidates who have obtained a Master’s degree in a relevant field with high grades and a strong interest in and commitment to research. Each candidate will be evaluated by a Program Committee and a personal interview will be conducted by the Director of DTU Photonics together with the PhD committee Chairman.

Vacant PhD positions

However, DTU Photonics is always interested in receiving applications from outstanding candidates, even if no vacancies are listed, because DTU Photonics is involved in so many activities, that it is often possible to create a position
