More about MSc. in Telecommunication

/upload/institutter/com/education/web_0094.jpg

DTU Fotonik is the department for Communications, Optics & Materials at the Technical University of Denmark. We welcome applications from Danish and International students, who wish to study at DTU Fotonik on an advanced level. The aim of this program is to train highly qualified engineers to a standard that will make them capable of performing research, development, planning, and analysis within a number of areas in telecommunications. Depending upon the specific selection of courses, the student will get the opportunity to concentrate on development of hardware or software for total telecommunication systems or for individual components. DTU Fotonik and CICT, associated with the IMM department, have many strong research areas. A comprehensive list is found below.

As one of the first universities in the world DTU in 1910 commenced an education dedicated to telecommunication. This made the foundation of today’s education in electronics or computer science, but it also evolved as a specialization by itself. Since year 2000 the teaching has been done exclusively in English. Each year a little less than one hundred students graduate in this area.

At DTU Fotonik we offer an interesting environment for your study. Many students, international as well as Danish, all join the same courses and work together on common projects. We offer excellent facilities in labs and the teaching is done by a highly qualified staff. A special attraction of DTU and DTU Fotonik is the easy access to the teaching staff which is almost always at your disposal around the teaching sessions and - after an appointment - also outside. Another attraction is the activating teaching methods of many courses. You do not just sit at a lecture, but you are engaged by exercises, computer simulations, group work or other similar activities.

The education relates to research that encompasses topics such as:

  • Internet technology and applications
  • ICT convergence and platforms
  • ICT design and management
  • Mobile services and service architectures
  • Architecture, design, and performance optimization of telecommunication networks
  • Transmission and switching
  • Broadband access networks
  • All-optical network elements
  • Planning of telecommunication networks
  • Compression of data from information sources, e.g. video or speech
  • Error-correcting coding
  • Mobile communications (both planning and components)
  • Software design
  • Design of specialized hardware components in VLSI
  • Optical component design

The student can specialize in several lines, e.g. systems/networks, hardware design (especially optical devices and components), or software design (including signal processing software). The mandatory courses are given at DTU Fotonik and IMM, and DTU Fotonik and IMM also give many of the supplementary courses together with other departments at DTU.

Requirements for International Students

Admission to the specific MSc program in Telecommunication is offered to students holding at least a Bachelors degree in electronics or computer science or having an equivalent background. To be more specific, the applicants must demonstrate skills in a number of the following subjects:

Mathematics
Linear algebra, analysis, and probability theory, e.g. corresponding to the following text:
Erwin Kreyszig Advanced Engineering Mathematics, John Wiley & Sons; ISBN: 0471154962. Chapters 1-10, 12-16, and 22.
Linear Systems and Circuit Theory:
Time continuous and time discrete systems, e.g. corresponding to the following texts: Richard C. Dorf & James A. Svoboda Introduction to Electric Circuits, Ed. 4, John Wiley & Sons; ISBN: 0471192465 and Emmanuel C. Ifeachor & Barrie W. Jervis Digital Signal Processing, ISBN: 0201-54413-x. Chapters 1-5.
The subjects may also be combined in one text, e.g. B.P. Lathi Signal Processing and Linear Systems, Oxford University Press; ISBN: 0195219171.
Analog and Digital Design:
Some knowledge of analog design is required, but the emphasis is on digital design, e.g. corresponding to: John F. Wakerly Digital Design Principles and Practices, Ed. 3, Prentice Hall; ISBN: 0132114593.
Software engineering including programming (C or equivalent):
Corresponding to e.g. Robert Lafore Object-Oriented Programming in C++, Ed. 3.
Fundamental classical electromagnetics in simple media:
Corresponding to e.g. D. K. Cheng Fundamentals of Engineering Electromagnetics Addison-Wesley Publishing Company, 1st Ed., 1993, Chapters 1-7.
Basic telecommunication, data communication, or communication theory:
No specific book, but these skills may be obtained in e.g. courses in communication principles or communication networks.

The merits and qualifications of the applicants will be considered individually, based on the submitted material. Since there are many more applications than places available, the level of the qualifications compared to other applicants will be of importance.

Job profile

Employment of the graduates from this programme is foreseen to take place in companies involved in:

  • Systems for broadband or mobile networks
  • Terminals for telecommunication, e.g. mobile phones or modems
  • Satellite communication
  • Architecture and protocols for networks
  • Design of telecommunication ICs
  • Design of optical components
  • Planning and management of telecommunication networks
  • Design of application software including communication, e.g. internet applications or e-commerce
