International MSc in Telecommunication

/upload/institutter/com/education/web_0224.jpgThe telecom sector plays a key role in the modern society, and traditional areas of telecom, IT, and broadcast are rapidly converging to form a new sector for information and communication technologies (ICT). This covers a wide range of topics, including advanced component design, complex network infrastructures, and development of services and ICT solutions that can meet the needs of the end users. The MSc in Telecommunication at DTU offers a unique possibility of having all these facets at one university and in one common education

The aim of this programme is to train highly qualified engineers to a standard that will make them capable of performing research, development, planning, and analysis within a number of areas in telecommunications. You may obtain some background information about the programme here.

Admission Criteria and Prerequisites

To read more about the general requirements for the MSc programs at DTU click here.

Admission to the specific MSc program in Telecommunication is offered to students holding at least a Bachelor's degree in electronics or computer science or having an equivalent background. A more specific description is given in the background material here.

The merits and qualifications of the applicants will be considered individually, based on the submitted material. Since there usually are many more applications than places available, the level of the qualifications compared to other applicants will be of importance.

In addition to the more broad requirements listed, the student is required to have passed courses similar to those found in a course list shown in Academic Requirements in the DTU Study Handbook. The purpose of these course is to form a bridge between the previous education and the M.Sc. programme. Normally, admitted students are chosen to have some background within the area as described above, and then there is a possibility of waiving this requirement. This is decided on individual basis from the material handed in with the application. Each study line to be described below will contain an recommendation.

These general requirements may not be enough for all courses listed in the specialization list, so the applicant has to study the prerequisite requirements of the courses carefully, and the applicant may be prepared for acquiring these prerequisites by some self-study.

Contents of Programme

The programme takes two years to complete. The exact organization and requirements depend upon the year of admission, but the contents are roughly the same.

  • The overall study plan with all its options for students admitted before September 2006 is found here.
  • The study plan for new students and for students admitted from September 2006 and later is described in the DTU Study Handbook

Both descriptions require certain knowledge of the course structure at DTU and this knowledge may be obtained in details from the DTU Course Catalogue. Note that the Course Catalogue is updated every year around May, so this link may not always lead to the version relevant for you. The links from the lists given in the study plan descriptions will always lead to the most recent description.

Recommended Study Lines

As a student you can specialize in several lines, e.g. systems/networks, hardware design (especially optical devices and components), software design (including signal processing software) and applications of ICT. Below we give four recommended study lines, but the student may also make more individual selections to cover his or her special needs. Parts of the individual projects in the study may be done at industry or organizations. The Copenhagen area has many possibilities covering every type of work from development centers for worldwide companies to small start-up companies. Each study line contains courses which are relevant for the appropriate application area and which are possible to follow taking schedule restrictions into account. The study lines are only recommendations so it is not necessary to adhere to one of these lines to obtain the degree in telecommunication.

From 2008, four study lines will be found. These are listed below and more information is found following the relevant link.

Students admitted before 2008 have slighty different possibilities for specialization. This is described in the 2007/2008 version of the Study Handbook.
